Messes are made of information and people. Abby Covert

Abby Covert’s book How to Make Sense of Any Mess inspired this blog.

One of her many maxims that I find comforting in moments of confusion or frustration is:

Make the unclear be clear.

That’s it, really. And yet such a simple exhortation belies a world of Dantesque messiness.

On the first page of the first chapter of How to Make Sense, Covert lists some words I hear frequently:

  • Change

  • Project

  • Chaos

  • Clutter

  • Complexity

  • Complicated

  • Disaster

  • Disorder

  • Mess

  • Cluster

  • Predicament

  • Quandary

  • Pickle

  • Situation

  • Nightmare

These words are music to my ears — because I know I am needed when I hear one — but also warning bells, because I also know the pain is about to begin.

I guess that makes me a Mess Masochist.
